Breaking as an independent artist is a David verse Goliath fight as is but breaking out as an out of Zona(Arizona) as an indie is a whole other beast in itself. Arizona has clearly never been the most accepting of states, if the SB 1070 law is an indication of how the state feels towards minorities. So when it comes to breaking out as a hip-hop, a genre of music that is dominated by minorities in a fairly arbitrary state, you’re pretty much shit out the game from the get. Real talk if it weren’t for our brother @GTTW, we probably would have never been introduced to Knox’s music unless he got scooped by a Major. Somehow this uphill battle never struck any fear in Zona baus Knox. From his initiation into the music world last year, he has done nothing but take strides towards the top. His latest mixtape release Regne showcases Knox’s talent on the mic and with the pen, as he fluctuates between freestyle tracks and newly composed singles. A wise man once said, “It takes heart to win.” makes This is clearly a motto that has kept Knox en route to greatness, his determination is something you can see and feel, and hear.
LC: Coming from a state that doesn’t have a a lot of representation in the rap world, how has the process been to actually breakout as an artist in Arizona?
KNOX: Its mos def been a long path for the short time being. I know for sure doing music out here, (it) isn’t easy to get support from these listeners. But process wise I just continue to consistantly make good music, original or non-original. It’s good to see the zone and other south west states slowly recognize my lyrical talent.
LC: While we’re talking about Zona, how do you feel about the current situation in Arizona since the passing of SB 1070? How do you see the future of Arizona and it’s relationship with “immigrants” or people of color for that matter?
KNOX: The SB 1070 law is straight bullshit. Its really a bad look for Arizona and our culture. Its sad to know race is still a big issue in America. Things will get better I’m sure of it, but its a real bad look. FTP!
LC: Amen to that broski. Let’s not forget, this interview is about the release of your new mixtape Regne, tell us a bit about it, and what kind of growth you see in yourself since your last tape, Knox=MC’s scurred?
KNOX: Haha (scurred) yeah man the REGNE was a tape I felt I had to prove my lyrics on. My first tape was all original production from my producers @redbuttonz and @realheat so on this tape I decided to kick some dope lyrical shit off some industry beats. There are a lot of artist’s in Arizona so I wanted to prove to the whole southwest and artist that I got bars. So I did just that. Growth wise I will always get better with time. I felt lyrically I showed whoever listened that they will want to hear more from me in the future.
LC:Word is you’re now affiliated with our brother’s over at GT, how did that happen, and what can we expect to come out of that union in the future?
KNOX: Yes Grindtime is the Familia shout out my brother @GTTw (T.Ward) for reachin out to me in 07. What to expect from me with the GT fam is greatness. Im an artist out the camp and i will play my role. So anything musically that the camp doin just know i will be beastin on shit. shout out the whole muuhfuckin crew!
LC: Shoutout to thee bro’s LEX-O, and GTTommy. I hear there’s a music video in LA being planned, can we get confirmation that LosChronicles can get the exclusive behind the scenes if that does happen?
KNOX: Aaahh man yes we hope to do some footy out there in LA before the year is up and LosChronicles is mos def gettin all the raw behind the scenes footy for sure!!!
